Transportation Information:
Metro The tournament hotel is just a short 4-minute walk from the North Bethesda Metro Stop on the Red Line of the DC Metrorail System. From the North Bethesda Metro Stop you can metro into downtown DC on the National Mall in approximately 35 minutes for $4.35! We hope you come early or stay late after to explore all that Washington DC and the National Mall has to offer. Please use the metro often as parking in DC is quite difficult. The best way to purchase Metro tickets is either by downloading the app and making purchases that way OR waiting till you are here in the DC area and purchasing tickets at any rail station kiosk.

Parking at the hotel If you choose to drive, parking at the hotel is 100% fretee thanks to the contract Phi Rho Pi negotiated. There is not a grocery store that is walking distance, but you can Uber easily to various grocery stores or pharmacies if you wanted to avoid car rentals.

Attractions The Cherry Blossom Festival is from March 16th- April 16th. It’s a great time to use the Metro to see the beauty of the cherry blossoms on the National Mall, visit all the monuments, or visit one of many National Smithsonian Museums (for free)! For entry to the highly popular National Museum of African American History & Culture we highly recommend you reserve your tickets in advance.
Airports Just a reminder that Washington DC/Regan DCA is the closest airport to the National Tournament hotel. You can even take the metro from the Regan National Metro Station (Yellow Line) to the Bethesda North Metro Station (Red Line) if you wanted.
Banquet formation:
Opening Banquet, Monday April 10th! We are so excited to host the Phi Rho Pi Opening Banquet! Doors to the banquet will open early at 6:00 PM. We are proud to feature a special guest DJ who will spin music from 6pm-7pm before the banquet begins as well for one hour after the banquet program concludes! Dress To Impress and come prepared to dance to kick off the tournament in a monumental fashion! In addition to the live DJ, we will also have a Red-Carpet Team Photo Experience outside the entrance of the dance in the Conference Center at 6pm. The photographer and red-carpet experience will be available from 6pm-8pm only! We can’t wait to see you there!!
Dinner Menu at the Banquet You have two entree options for dinner. Entree choices must be entered on the Phi Rho Pi Registration Page on FTN. Please be sure to finalize your meal selections and attendee information by Sunday March 25th, 2023. To ensure we can do our best to seat your team together you MUST indicate all the people (students, coaches, guests) who will be attending the banquet.

Banquet Speaker In addition to hearing from Phi Rho Pi Officers, NOVA’s College President, and others we are delighted to welcome back a Phi Rho Pi alumni Mr. Alexander “AJ” Merton as your 2023 Keynote speaker. AJ competed for South Orange County Community College (CA) in 2002 and 2003 winning Bronze, Gold, and Silver Medal Awards in a variety of events including: POI, Impromptu, CEDA Debate, NPDA Debate, and Extemporaneous Speaking. Since Phi Rho Pi, AJ has grown into one of the top legal minds in the DC area, developed his own nonprofit, and was one of the youngest lawyers to make partner at the prestigious Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan Law Firm. We look forward to hearing inspiring words from AJ!
Food options during the tournament at the hotel Though this hotel does not offer free breakfast for guests. They do have a coffee shop called COLBY that will feature several grab and go lunch and breakfast options at a discounted price for Phi Rho Pi students, coaches, and judges. Please review the COLBY Breakfast Menu and COLBY Lunch menu. In addition to these options there are several restaurants within various price ranges within walking distance. We will provide a helpful guide when you arrive in your welcome kit. There will also be a judge lounge for judges that will offer coffee, tea and pastries in the morning, and a light snack in the afternoon to help fuel judges up for watching great rounds!!

Phi Rho Pi Hotel The tournament hotel is the amazing Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. You are going to love this newly refurbished and modern location and all the cool amenities! The hotel’s conference center is spacious and there are tons of food, shopping, and entertainment options within walking distance in Pike & Rose and select options in the hotel! The hotel rooms are newly furnished, a good size and each room has a fridge for your convenience!

Phi Rho Pi T-shirts Are In! We are excited about the design and high quality of the Phi Rho Pi T-shirts! To secure your t-shirt order please indicate on the Phi Rho Pi Registration Page on FTN if you would like t-shirt orders included in your registration costs. T-shirts are only $6 per shirt! You will want one!! Please be sure to enter the correct sizes you need! There will be some available for purchase if you did not register request them, but there are no guarantees we will have the sizes you want if you did not register.
Look at what is NEW for the 2024 Phi Rho Pi Tournament
A student may now have two duos (with different partners) entered into the tournament. Duo Points have changed: 20 points for Gold / 15 points for Silver / 10 points for Bronze Self contained devices may be used to flow during IPDA and Parliamentary debate rounds but only without internet connection. Look at what is NEW for the 2023 Phi Rho Pi Tournament InterpTheater (IT): Reading stands, stools, chairs, ladders, steps, black boxes, props and lighting may now be used. Individual Events with 20 or fewer entries will go directly to a final round. Parliamentary Debate - During the debate, debaters will be limited to using any hand-written notes or types notes they have prepared during prep time. Debaters will not be allowed to use the internet during the round or use the copy and paste function when prepping notes electronically. Parliamentary and IPDA - will have a choice of 5 resolutions (2 policy - 2 value or Fact + 1 additional of either Policy, Fact or Value) Reminder of what was new for the Phi Rho Pi 2022 Tournament: Phi Rho Pi now allows third year members to compete. You may now double enter in one (not all) of the following patterns:

Title IX TRAINING
Phi Rho Pi does not tolerate any behaviors which constitute sexual harassment. In order to protect the safety of all participants, everyone who attends the National Tournament should undergo Title IX/sexual harassment training as mandated by their home institution. All participants, judges, students, staff, and coaches must engage in Title IX training between August 1, 2022 and April 3, 2023.
The preferred option for training is that program’s make use of appropriate offices on a school’s home campus. Once complete, proof of completion forms should be submitted at registration.
