Latest News from the Tournament Director (April 12, 2013)
Folk,
It is almost here. I hope you and your teams are ready for the 2013 Phi Rho Pi National Tournament. It promises to be a good tournament. I thought I would do one last email prior to talking with you in person.
First of all, don't forget to bring your student eligibility form with you when you come to the tournament. You will need to have it with you for registration.
Secondly, the hotel asked to request that if you are driving vans, that you ask the bell captains where to park. There is an office parking lot that is NOT available to park in and they will tow vehicles that are parked in that space. Even though it looks inviting because of the oversized nature, it is not available for our use. Please pay strict attention to where you can park in order to avoid any unpleasant issues.
We have a number of breakout rooms over the weekend and through Tuesday at 1:00 that can be used for practice. There will be signup sheets in the tabroom which is in Hidden Hills.
I am going to be off property on Sunday. For the first time ever, I am going to take a day and do something fun before the tournament starts. I'm going to pretend to be a kid and go to Disneyland. However, I will have my phone with me in case you need to contact me with any pressing issues. In addition, Duane, the younger (Smith) will be on property and will be in the Hidden Hills room off and on all day to help with issues. He will also have sign up sheets available for use of breakout rooms throughout the day. As always on any non critical issues you can email me and I will take care of things upon my return to the property.
I hope you are looking forward to a great tournament. I know I am. Duane Smith, Josh Miller and the entire LA Valley College staff have been busy to make this an outstanding experience. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you and your students.

Tournament Director Post (March 28, 2013)
We are getting closer to the start of the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament. The next deadline is approaching and I don't want anyone to miss it. Here are a couple of items to consider: The attendee information needs to be completed by next Monday, April 1. At that point, we need to contact vendors about the t-shirts, banquet information, and name tags. So please make sure the information on all of the individuals attending the tournament is entered. T-shirts are optional this year and are $6.00 each to be added to your fees. Don't forget to add those fees in when calculating your fees.
I also need judge information so that I can start putting together the judge philosophy booklets. If you wish to have extra booklets, please send me a note telling me how many you would like. Remember that the cost is $10 for each extra booklet.
Please feel free to fill out the entry so I can start preliminary work on that information. Remember, you still have a week to change entry without late charges.
If you have students that are in five events, you will need to identify the non-sweepstakes event. . I am also in search of a hybrid for a student who wants to do parliamentary debate. If you have someone who is interested, please let me know.
Don't forget to download the student eligibility form which is found on the Joy Website. It will need to be completed by the registrar and brought to registration.
If you haven't had the chance, please take a look at the new Website. It is revamped and reorganized. Thanks to Jeff Przybylo and Cynthia Dewar-Kudsi for doing all of the work on this. I really appreciate it and I think you will like the changes.
In addition, check out the Facebook pages. There is one for the organization Phi Rho Pi (This is still under construction so like and share) and one for the tournament at Phi Rho Pi Tournament 2013. The tournament page will give you some insight into the happenings at the tournament, including the banquet theme, yoga classes and the special food night. Like them both and keep up on all the tournament happenings. Thanks to Fred Ebert and Duane Smith for making these two pages happen.
Finally, as you may know the California State Tournament was held at this property a few weeks ago. There were some problems with colleges being charged for damages to sleeping rooms. These charges were not inconsequential. The Woodland Hills Marriott is extremely thorough in their review of sleeping rooms after occupants check out. Please make certain that you check out all of your student rooms when you check-in and out of the hotel. In fact, it is recommended that you document your sleeping rooms by taking pictures or videos with a date/time stamp when you check in and out. We are also going to ask that the hotel staff be available to do a walk-through of the rooms upon check out I will keep you posted about this option as I finalize that option with the hotel.
Let me know if there is any way I or the hosts can help to make this an outstanding tournament.
Thanks, Duane
